April 10th, 2008 — The Campaign Trail
I was driving down the road a few days ago — noticing the campaign signs that lined their edges — and a most curious thought came to mind. Signs Don’t Vote! People Do!
That got me thinking about all the money that goes down the drain when the signs are blown away during thunderstorms or are mowed down by highway maintenance crews. And of what message the signs can convey when they end up, long before the election, in the landfill. Then it hit me again. Signs Don’t Vote! People Do!
Many of my supporters say to me, “Wayne, we gotta’ get more signs out.” I understand their thoughts because that’s how elections are done… right? Isn’t it assumed that whoever has the most signs, wins? No. The fact is, whoever has the most votes, wins! Remember… Signs Don’t Vote! People Do!
Signs don’t have families who want to go to bed at night feeling safe from intruders. Signs don’t have children, whose parents want a community free of sexual predators. Signs don’t have homes and businesses whose insurances rates are inflated because of arson. And, signs don’t warmly dream of a community they call home… a place where little signs are raised — then, little grandsigns after them.
Here I go again — Signs Don’t Vote! People Do!
So, I say to to all my supporters, “Let’s not concentrate on how many signs we can deliver… but, on how many votes we can deliver.”
Just remember… Signs Don’t Vote! People Do!

Many of you have asked me what you can do to help me become the next Darlington County Sheriff. My answer? Walk, walk, walk… and talk, talk, talk!
The campaign for Sheriff is not much different than any other political campaign… You have to let people know who you are and why they should vote for you. Those of you who know me understand why I am the best candidate for Sheriff. The key to my being elected lies in how successful we are in letting others know about me, too!
It Doesn’t Cost a Dime
So, here’s something that you can do that won’t cost you a dime but will go a long way towards helping to build support for our campaign. Make it a point to walk your street and talk with your neighbors at least twice between now and June 10th. If you don’t already have a supply of flyers on hand, as well as bumper stickers and yard signs, you can make a list of your needs and get it to me after your visits. I’ll make sure the requested materials are delivered promptly.
Tell your friends who you are and why you’re there, then boldly and confidently ask them to vote for me on Election Day. Engage them in a brief conversation about why you are supporting my candidacy and ask them to visit this web site. Finally, ask them if they would be willing to do the same thing you just did… talk with their friends about me… then thank them for their time and move on.
The more “Street Sergeants” we have in Wayne’s Army, the better our chance of success in June.
Good luck. Now, get out there and walk, walk, walk… and talk, talk, talk!
